Big changes are underway with the Citi Premier Card – Citi's longtime, popular $95 annual fee travel rewards credit card. Sometime soon, by the looks of it.
Though it's been a mainstay in the travel credit card landscape for years, Citi has played fourth fiddle to the likes of Chase, American Express, and Capital One. This Thursday, though, Citi closed new applications for the Citi Premier Card – it's no longer available to newcomers, period.
What's next? We can't say for certain, but change for Citi's most popular travel card has been in the air for years.
Citi filed a trademark for the “Citi Strata Premier Card” nearly 18 months ago.
But what will that card bring to the table? Will it come with an increase to the Premier card's current $95 annual fee? And what does it mean for longtime Citi Premier cardholders: Will they keep those cards or eventually convert to whatever comes next? And is a long-rumored premium card to replace the (also shuttered for applications) Citi Prestige Card on the way, too?
We can't say for sure just yet.
Citi Premier Card: An Overview
It may not have the same big name or massive marketing budget, but the Citi Premier Card was already one of the most well-rounded travel rewards credit cards on the market.
